Larry should run again
Today, Ken Gray of the Ottawa Citizen asks “Should Larry O’Brien Run For Mayor Again?”
Here is my reply:
Of course I think the Mayor should run again. As I have said many times on my blog, the Mayor has a number of accomplishments under his belt but some need his support and leadership if he hopes they become realities. If he leaves now, he risks his vision and legacy being dismantled by the next council.
Larry O’Brien is not the out of box politician. His record of missteps and misspeaks shows that. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. Politicians are not the most trusted bunch of folks and the feelings are they are in it for themselves (pensions, perks, trough, etc…).
O’Brien’s motivation is different. Besides my belief that he actually wants to make a better Ottawa and a more responsive City Hall, it’s his ego. And like many self made men who enter politics like Bloomberg, Schwarzenegger, and Trudeau, it’s the changes they leave behind that define their success.
Mayor O’Brien once said that tracks can be laid down and pulled up a tunnel will be there forever. Well, the tunnel is not built yet so he better stick around one more term…or at least try to. His raison d’être in politics is not yet accomplished.
