Mathieu Fleury – A positive change for Ward 12
One of the first reasons why I reached out to Mathieu Fleury in the 2010 municipal elections was he had an awesome website, www.MathieuFleury.ca. It was clean, friendly and it had a kewl logo. He also worked hard in the election, was positive and the people around him really supported him.
He continues to impress me. He’s a hard working councillor and diligently tries to understand all sides of the issues and is not afraid to say what he feels. Case in point where unlike many councillors quickly who quickly side with the loudest voices, Fleury is taking a considered approach to the King Edward development plans (Community still fighting for four-lane option on King Edward).
Mathieu also posts and keeps up to date his voting record. He also includes why he voted the way he did.
He also endeavours to reach out to everyone in his ward as can be seen in his recent posting on the OC Transpo route changes. Instead of relying on a mailing from the counillors’ office or advertising from OC Transpo themselves, Fleury has posted on his great website a very informative and ward specific video about the changes and how they affect Ward 12 residents. It’s almost 19 minutes long but it’s very comprehensive.

Bravo! Bon travail Mathieu. Keep up the good work!

I would also congratulate the Councillor for remaining actively engaged on twitter (@MathieuFleury).
As a new councillor, Mathieu is doing a great job. However he still needs to address the abandoned/derelict buildings in our ward. Case in point, the “our Lady’s school” building located at the corner of Cumberland and Murray street. Abandonned for more than 30 years. These building owners should not be allowed to leave their buildings is such state. The city must up-date/change or create by-laws that allows this situation to happen.
Cleaning up these buildings would help in the re-development of the market area….the city’s number 1 tourist destination.
Mathieu, your ward is looking for you to be pointsman on this situation.
Great job on the video, keep up the good work!
Hello Mr. Fleury,
I and the other members of my community were informed today about a proposed application to build an 18 story building at 101 Wurtemburg / Clarence East. I would invite you to come by and visit this site and imagine if you will the presence of such a monstrosity in a quiet, family residential neighborhood. The lot is tiny and is currently occupied by a two-storey home. This neighborhood is well loved by its residents. It is quiet, safe and far enough away from the huge towers popping up in the downtown. I can only speak for myself at this point, but I would like you to know that I have lived in my house, basically across the street from this proposed site, for over 10 years. Had there been a high-rise there, I would not have dreamed of purchasing this place. My initial thought upon learning about Claridge homes wanting to build here was, “I want to move” However I cannot imagine my house, currently taxed at a value of $460,000 would have much appeal to a perspective buyer. After having invested years and a lot of money into my house, I now feel I am on the verge of loosing that investment. I have spoken to others and I assure you there will be many many objections to come, if they have not already. I can appreciate that it is a choice piece of real-estate, on the river etc. however it is not a choice plan for a residential neighborhood. The thru traffic in here with people detouring towards King Edward to get to Gatineau every afternoon is already ridiculously dangerous. Most of the houses around here are occupied by families with kids and the last thing we need is additional traffic. The proposed building would be the highest in the area and would loom over the neighborhood in such a ridiculous way that it is almost laughable that someone would even propose it… unfortunately someone has. At any rate, as our elected official, I hope you will consider the members of your ward and our concerns over the interests of a huge development giant that is already buying and building up this ward to no end. It would be like building an 18 storey high-rise in the middle of the glebe really. Come see for yourself sometime. Thank you. Sincerely Dylan Hunter, 529
Clarence Street East.
Dylan,
FYI – email Councillor Fleury a direct message. He might not get it through Blake’s website.

@Dylan Hunter: There are already 3 highrises on Wurtemburg. 131 was also built by Claridge and it is considered a luxury building. So will 101. A fourth building to replace the ugly house will be wonderful. The neighbourhood is nice but it can only benefit from luxury housing. And worrying about your house losing it’s value, that’s a waste of time and energy as it will simply not happen. This is Ottawa, prices go nothing but up. Haven’t you heard?
